The higher your conversion rates, the larger your list will be. The larger your list, the more sales you will make.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s more to improving conversions and growing your list than just creating better offers and attracting more traffic. Each piece of your email list building and marketing effort has a job to do, and it\u2019s up to you to make sure it\u2019s performing as well as possible.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/A-B-SplitTest-300x216.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/A-B-SplitTest-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/A-B-SplitTest.png 595w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where split-testing (aka A\/B testing) will come in handy. By tracking the results you get, then making incremental changes and comparing the numbers, you\u2019ll begin to see the patterns that make a difference in your efforts.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s the basis of split testing: tracking, tweaking, and testing with the goal of continuous improvement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Can You Split-Test? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A better question might be, <em>\u201cWhat can\u2019t you split-test?\u201d<\/em> Because frankly, you can test just about everything, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Subject lines<\/li>\n<li>Calls to action<\/li>\n<li>Button colors<\/li>\n<li>Fonts and text colors<\/li>\n<li>Opt-in incentives<\/li>\n<li>Landing page layout<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But here\u2019s the trick to a good split-test: Only test one single change at a time.<\/p>\n<p>You might be tempted to rewrite your headline and your call to action and your button text, but don\u2019t. While it may seem more efficient, the problem with this approach is that you\u2019ll have no way of knowing which change had an effect on your conversions.<\/p>\n<p>Did they go up because of the call to action? Or drop because of the subject line? Who knows?<\/p>\n<p>Instead, make systematic changes to your landing pages and carefully track results. That\u2019s the only way to know for sure what\u2019s working\u2014and what\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>Most landing page tools such as LeadPages and ClickFunnels have built in tools for split-testing. If you\u2019re not using these tools, you can also set up split tests using your Google Webmaster tools account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Headline (aka subject line) is your first target to test<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-929 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Headlines-Today-300x113.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Headlines-Today-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Headlines-Today-600x226.png 600w, https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Headlines-Today-768x290.png 768w, https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Headlines-Today-1030x388.png 1030w, https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Headlines-Today-1200x452.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Headlines-Today.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Knowing no one will see the body of your email unless they like your headline, it makes sense to concentrate first on creating a killer headline that will lure readers in.\u00a0 Testing headline options will give you the keys to higher open rates for sure.<\/p>\n<p>Some things to test:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Short\/Long test:<\/strong> Varying opinions exist on whether short or long headlines are best.\u00a0 Whichever gives you the best open rate is my choice.\u00a0 Don\u2019t just add meaningless words to make a headline long.\u00a0 There must be value in adding each word.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Action Verb:<\/strong> If you have an action verb in the headline, try stronger or weaker verbs to see if your response changes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intrigue:<\/strong> Try adding an element of intrigue to entice the reader to open.\u00a0 The reader should be excited to see what is on the inside if you do it right.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Controversy:<\/strong> Adding an element of controversy in the subject may work.\u00a0 Be careful not to add any religious, political or name-calling though.\u00a0 One time I added something like \u201cdon\u2019t be an idiot\u2026\u201d and the first line of the body was \u201cI would never say that to anyone.\u201d But some folks did not read past the \u201cidiot\u201d part and slammed me for calling them that!\u00a0 Got a really high open rate on that one nonetheless.\u00a0 And got rid of some snarly readers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Testing Open and Click Rates <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your email list manager should provide a way to split-test your emails as well. Open rates are critical when it comes to email marketing and list engagement. After all, if your audience isn\u2019t opening your mail, they\u2019re not reading it either!<\/p>\n<p>You can easily improve your open rates by split-testing subject lines to determine the format and style most likely to get your readers\u2019 attention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Testing your click rates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To improve the click rates on the links in your email, test your email\u2019s call to action. To do this, set up two identical emails\u2014same subject line and same content\u2014but change the call to action to see which gets the best response from your list. You\u2019ll be able to use this information in later campaigns to improve click-throughs on all your emails.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When to start split testing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just like list-building, it\u2019s never too early to begin split-testing. There\u2019s no magical number of opt-ins you must have to get started. There\u2019s no amount of traffic that\u2019s too small. So don\u2019t wait\u2014start split testing your opt-in forms and emails now, so you can enjoy the best conversion rates possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keeping track<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GraphUpTrend-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GraphUpTrend-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thesubmarineguy.com\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GraphUpTrend.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Keep track of all of your split test results, even small changes that yielded small results as well as changes the led to negative results. Having list of these will become a real treasure chest of &#8220;how to write&#8221; tips you can look back on.\u00a0 The longer you do this, the less you will have to test to know what works for your list.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s never time to stop testing of course but you will see a rate of diminishing returns at some point.\u00a0 That may be when you need to bring in a third party consultant to look at your work.\u00a0 Fresh eyes bring new perspectives.\u00a0 Keep it in mind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Email marketing truly is a numbers game.
